Rex Hammock of Hammock Inc. kicks off the social-media discussion during SNAP's pre-conference workshop.
 
Rex began with a fun presentation filled with colorful dots and dissected the old model of branding and marketing, encouraging attendees to change their thinking by focusing on a group's passion.
 
What is social media? Rex defined social media as:
 
  • How people manage their identities online.
  • The ability to express one's self.
  • Community.
 
"That is what social media is," Rex said. " Everyone who has an identity online has the ability to express themselves online."
 
Bottom line with social media: Go to the places where the conversation is already happening. Your members will probably already be there.
