The Next Great Platform: Magazines and Mobile Devices

Jeff De Cagna, chief strategist and founder, Principled Innovation LLC, kicked off the last discussion of the pre-conference workshop by asking: What are you doing with mobile communications?

Mobile communicationsFrom configuring websites to be mobile-friendly to smart phone apps, many organizations represented in the room are already thinking about and using mobile communications. Jeff says it's the next big opportunity for associations who want to get their messages out to members and readers.

With social media, "we're already having to further rethink our publications for the 21st century," Jeff said. "Mobile is challenging all of us to take it even a step further."

Quoting Michael Jones of Google, Jeff said that we're entering the "mobile decade," where mobile devices will be as important to communications as computers have been over the last two decades.

A couple of fun facts that Jeff shared with the group:

  • 60 percent of the world's population has a mobile phone
  • 39 percent of the U.S. adult population has seen its online use frequency grow with the use of mobile devices
  • 25 percent of our time is spent managing e-mail (sending, organizing, forwarding)

A question for consideration: How would you crowdsource content with people who use an iPhone?

"I'm just trying to get you to think creatively and big," Jeff said. "It's not just a tool for delivery and for review of content; it will be a tool that people may use to create content for you."

"And if we're thinking about mobile devices, we can't just be thinking about phones," Jeff said. "We have to consider devices like e-book readers as well."

What are your next steps with mobile?
